Snapshots from our School Trip!

The gleaming entrance hall of Megaro Mousikis.

Finally the students of Knock English met Cinderello last Thursday and enjoyed every minute of it. It is always a wonderful sight to see students having a good time and, perhaps more importantly, being highly responsive and completely at ease in an English-speaking environment!

Below you can see snapshots from the lovely performance and the students' participation both on and off stage.

Let's all sing Lambrini's song!

Lambrini, inspired by a song in the B Junior coursebook, wrote her very own lyrics about her likes and dislikes. She even accompanied her assignment with a cute little alien seemingly dancing to the upbeat music of the song. Lambrini manages to prove that, indeed, writing is lots of fun!

Knock English students meet Cinderello!

As you all know, on Thursday 28th January the students of Knock English will meet Cinderello, a boy in desperate need of their help, through an engaging interactive performance in English.

The play is about the predicament of this poor boy, bullied by his awful sisters and stepmother and lurching from one adventure to the other.

Given that the play is performed entirely in English, the cognitive and language benefits are so many it is hard to know where to begin.

First of all, part of the performance is interactive, meaning that the audience will be participating as well, rather than passively watching the play. This, in turn, translates into rigorous speaking practice and development of communication skills along with the listening skills.

Secondly, by exposing children to an English-speaking environment other than that of the classroom, we can achieve our two-fold purpose. Varying our teaching approaches and constantly providing our classes with diverse stimuli and learning opportunities helps us cater to any differences in our pupils' learning styles (kinesthetic, visual, auditory, etc). What's more, we believe that kids will have the chance to reinforce past knowledge while at the same time being introduced to new vocabulary and language structures more naturally - learning without realising it!

But this school trip's purpose goes far beyond language instruction, since an additional goal of ours is to help students also grow as persons and provide them with a well-rounded education.

By following Cinderello's story, children will learn first-hand about how we can muster the courage and strength to face our problems or fears head-on, thus overcoming all obstacles that come our way. We are confident that the morale of the story will be immediately internalised by students, and better yet, reflected in their lives later on.

Don't miss it!

Christmas in the UK - Our Poster

Our goal this month was to introduce pupils to some key vocabulary and a few fun facts about how Christmas is celebrated in the UK. What better way to achieve this than by decorating our classroom with a related poster!

This way, students not only get to expand their vocabulary through visual prompts, but they also familiarise themselves with the British customs and traditions associated with this special celebration.

Making a Nativity scene with our Prejuniors

In one of our last lessons with Prejunior just before the school breaks up for Christmas, we decided to teach our young learners some Christmas vocabulary in a more experiential way - through craft-making.

My Ideal Neighbourhood, by Elias & Cleo

After being introduced to fictitious stories, B Junior students were asked to write about an ideal neighbourhood. Here you will have the chance to learn more about what Elias and Cleo's ideal neighbourhoods look like.

It is our firm belief that assigning such tasks (familiar, yet imaginative; simple, yet challenging) helps spur pupils' imagination and boost their creativity - two traits that prove highly valuable in school and later on in life.

My Superhero, by Alexander

When Alexander had to write about Spiderman, he decided to accompany his assignment with a drawing of his favourite superhero. Like many of his classmates, Alexander is a young artist in the making, don't you agree?

A hamster, a dog and our A Juniors...

Last week, Ann presented her writing project 'My Pets' in class... along with her pets in the flesh!

What's even more surprising, though, is that Ann is a Junior A student! Only two months into our A Junior course, students are not only familiarised with the alphabet, but they are also perfectly able to read and write small assignments like this one. To top it all, our pupils were highly engaged and enthusiastic throughout their first-ever writing project and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Barney in the flesh!
A hamster, another cute furry visitor in Knock English.

Halloween mini-event

In Knock English we consider it imperative that students be acquainted with certain aspects of the culture of the foreign language they are learning. In other words, language instruction is not our sole purpose; we seize every single opportunity to raise our students' cultural awareness!

Below are some snapshots of the students' brief introduction to the Halloween celebration.

Having a blast!
